Cincy-bred band among NYT's 100 Greatest Living American Songwriters
https://www.cincinnati.com/story/ent...0007/?tbref=hpA Cincinnati-bred band is among the greatest living songwriters in America, according to a new list.
New York Times Magazine released a list of the 30 Greatest Living American Songwriters in April. It then followed that effort by asking its readers for their thoughts on who should have been honored. After its poll brought in over 25,000 ballots and about 12,000 unique choices, the magazine put together it's readers' top 100 Greatest Living American Songwriters.
And The National made the list.
The band, consisting of Cincinnati natives Matt Berninger, Aaron and Bryce Dessner, and Bryan and Scott Devendorf, ranked No. 85 on the readers' choice ranking, right behind Billie Joe Armstrong and ahead of Lauryn Hill, Barry Manilow, Alicia Keys, Olivia Rodrigo and others.
196. This gal is still a cutie. The Australian singer just recently turned 58 . She's earned 2 Grammys and released 17 albums. There's only been one song in history that has reached the Top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in three different decades and for three different artists. The song was #1 in 1962, #1 in 1974 , and the young lady pictured below, who just turned 58, took the song to # 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1987.
Can you name the pretty pop princess and the song that she sent into the Top 5 of the Billboard Hot 100 for the third time in three decades?

197. Paul wrote it, originally for a long-forgotten movie starring Ringo Starr, and then offered it to four boys that called themselves The Iveys. But Paul was to the point, and very direct--- you are to do it as an exact copy of my demo. You see , Paul had come to the Abby Road Studios about thirty or forty minutes early on the morning of July 24, 1969. The Beatles had a recording session scheduled in less than an hour but Paul wanted to demo the new song he had written for the movie. He made the demo in about thirty minutes or so. Paul approached the Iveys with an offer for them to record his song: 'Look, I've got this song; I've been asked to do the film and I really don't have the time.Do you wanna do it?"
Now, when Paul offered the song to the Iveys, he didn't mince words---the song had to be essentially a copy of his demo. There was some slight resistance, with the Iveys wanting to add their own variations , but Paul said no. He wanted an exact duplicate of his demo because he felt if it was done exactly the same, it would be a sure fire hit.
Paul , who produced the record, auditioned each of the Iveys for lead vocalist on the track. One Ivey was deemed "a bit nasal." Another Ivey was "too muggy." Finally, Paul decided on the rhythm guitarist at the time, a guy by the name of Evans. Paul set out to create a carbon copy of his demo. Apple execs thought the band's name was "really stupid" and suggested a name change. Paul suggested the band change its name to "Home." Lennon suggested "The Glass Onion," and then, sarcastically, "Prix(pronounced "pricks").. Finally, an Apple executive , while meeting with the band's manager, recalled the working title for a Beatles' song from the Sergeant Pepper album. He suggested the band change its name to a word from that working title. The band agreed to the name change.
One day, as Paul was busy working with the band to create the exact carbon copy sound of his demo recording, John and Yoko happened to be looking on in the studio. McCartney's approach in the studio that day was, "just copy that(the demo), the way it is, and I think you'll have a hit with it,' you know?" John looked over at Paul, then bowed and said, "Oh, wise one, oh sage, show us the light." Somehow, I don't think John cared much for Paul. lol
Well, the most Beatles-esque , non-Beatles recording was, in fact , a hit, just as Paul predicted. The "carbon copy" of his July 24, 1969 demo of the song peaked at #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the spring of 1970 and reached #4 on the UK Singles chart. This was the breakthrough hit for the band, who went on to have several more hits, including two other Billboard 100 Top ten songs in the 70's .
The song was featured in the soundtrack of the 1969 movie , starring Ringo and Peter Sellers. Paul's 1969 demo officially became a Beatles song in 1996, when it appeared on a Beatles ' compilation album.
Name the song and the band.
