2019-2020: RedsZone's Top Reds Prospects Poll Results

Rank - (Position) Player Name - Acquisition Notes - Including draft round and draft year. ($bonus - school (home state)). And most recent stat line.
*** - (CF/RF) Shogo Akiyama - The Reds signed Shogo as a Free Agent in 2020 (3 yr / $21.00M - INT (Japan)). The left handed hitting oufielder amassed a .303 - .392 - .471 line as a 31 year old in 143 games (678 PA's) in the Nippon Pofessional Baseball League during the 2019 season. He will be eligible for the MLB rookie of the year award this season. Note: His contract does not count towards the clubs' 2019-20 IFA Pool.

#1 - (LHSP) Nicholas Lodolo - The Reds 1st round draft selection in 2019 ($5.43M bonus - (JR) Texas Christian University (CA)). The tall lefty amassed a 6W-6L record with a 2.36 ERA in 16 GS (103 IP) as a 21 year old with TCU and then a 0W-1L record with a 2.45 ERA in 18 IP at RK/A level ball during the 2019 season.

#2 - (RHSP) Hunter Greene - The Reds 1st round draft selection in 2017 ($7.23M bonus - HS (CA)). He missed the entire 2019 season after undergoing TJS this past April, he'll likely miss the beginning of the 2020 season as well. In 2018, he posted a 3W-7L record with a 4.48 ERA in 18 GS (68 IP) as an 18 year old with A Dayton (he was one of the youngest players in the league at the time).

#3 - (C) Tyler Stephenson - The Reds 1st round draft selection in 2015 ($3.14M bonus - HS (GA)). The right handed hitting catcher hit .285 - .350 - .390 as a 22 year old in 89 games (312 PA's) at the AA level during the 2019 season. Defensively he managed to throw out 28 of 104 potential basestealers, a 27% CS rate.

#4 - (SS) Jose Garcia - The Reds signed Garcia as an International Free Agent in June 2017 ($5.00M bonus & a $5.00M overage fee - INT (Cuba)). The right handed hitting shortstop hit .280 - .343 - .436 as a 21 year old in 104 games (452 PA's) at the A+ level during the 2019 season. Defensively he started 100 games at SS and finished the season with a .943 FLD%.

#5 - (3B) Jonathan India - The Reds 1st round draft selection in 2018 ($5.30M bonus - (JR) University of Florida (FL)). The right handed hitting third baseman hit .259 - .365 - .402 as a 22 year old in 121 combined games (512 PA's) at the A+ & AA levels during the 2019 season. After dabbling a bit at shortstop with the Reds in 2018 he spent the 2019 season almost exclusively at the hot corner (small sample of 5 games at second base).

#6 - (CF) Stuart Fairchild - The Reds 2nd round draft selection in 2017 ($1.80M bonus - (JR) Wake Forest University (WA)). The right handed hitting center fielder hit .264 - .352 - .441 as a 23 year old in 109 combined games (460 PA's) at the A+ & AA levels during the 2019 season. Stuart's stock got an added boost due to his showing in the AFL, he's shown to be a solid defensive CF'er but his drop in stolen bases last year is concerning.

#7 - (RHSP) Antonio Santillan - The Reds 2nd round draft selection in 2015 ($1.35M bonus - HS (TX)). The big bodied right hander took a step back during the 2019 season, he had a 2W-8L record with a 4.84 ERA in 21 GS (102 IP) as a 22 year old at the AA level and spent time on the disabled list with a tricep strain. But that was still solid enough to warrant the Reds adding him to the 40 man roster.

#8 - (CF) Michael Siani - The Reds 4th round draft selection in 2018 ($2.00M bonus - HS (PA)). The left handed hitting center fielder has yet to hit for power but he was able to put up a league average .253 - .333 - .339 batting line in 121 games (531 PA's) as a 19 year old at the A level during the 2019 season. Siani comes with a ++ rating in speed and defense.

#9 - (RHSP) Lyon Richardson - The Reds 2nd round draft selection in 2018 ($2.00M bonus - HS (FL)). The former two-way standout posted a 3W-9L record with a 4.15 ERA in 26 GS (113 IP) as a 19 year old at the A level during the 2019 season. He sports a mid 90's fastball, a so-so slider (which is showing improvement) and a so-so changeup; he carries a #3 starter ceiling.

#10 - (2B) Tyler Callihan - The Reds 3rd round draft selection in 2019 ($1.50M bonus - HS (FL)). The left handed hitting middle infielder hit .263 - .298 - .442 as a 19 year old in 57 games (238 PA's) at the RK level during the 2019 season. Callihan started 20 games at secondbase and started an additional 31 games at thirdbase.

#11 - (3B) Rece Hinds - The Reds 2nd round draft selection in 2019 ($1.80M bonus - HS (FL)). The big bodied, right handed hitting, third baseman suited up for only 3 games as an 19 year old in RK level ball during the 2019 season. Defensively speaking he's got the arm to stay at 3B but he's probably going to struggle with his footwork out of the gate - if he moves off 3B it's likely to 1B/LF or possibly RF.

#12 - (RHSP) José De León - The Dodgers 24th round draft selection in 2013 ($0.04M bonus - (JR) Southern University (Puerto Rico)). De Leon is only a few days shy of amassing 2 years of big league service time, but he still qualifies for these rankings because nearly all of that time was spent on the DL recovering from TJS. Jose had a 2W-1L record with a 3.54 ERA in 56 IP as a 26 year old at the AAA level in 2019 (in addition he had a small cup of coffee in the bigs).

#13 - (RHRP) Joel Kuhnel - The Reds 11th round draft selection in 2016 ($0.13M bonus - (JR) University of Texas at Arlington (AZ)). Kuhnel posted a combined 5W-3L-14SV record with a 2.18 ERA over 54 IP as a 24 year old at the AA & AAA levels in during the 2019 season (in addition he saw action in 11 big league games). The power righty is big league ready; sporting a 100 mph fastball, plus slider, and a so-so changeup.

#14 - (OF) Terry Friedl - The Reds signed Friedl as a Non-Drafted Free Agent in August 2016 ($0.73M bonus & a $0.45M overage fee - (RS-SO) University of Nevada (CA)). The left handed hitting outfielder managed to hit .235 - .347 - .385 as a 23 year old in 65 games (269 PA's) at the AA level during the 2019 season. He struggled with a right shoulder injury and tendinitis in his right ankle.

#15 - (CF) Jose Siri - The Reds signed Siri as an International Free Agent in September 2012 ($unk bonus - INT (Dominican Republic)). The center fielder hit a combined .237 - .300 - .357 as a 23 year old in 141 combined games (517 PA's) at the AA & AAA levels during the 2019 season. He's a plus defender with good range and a strong accurate arm, thus should stick in CF for the foreseeable future. Plate discipline is his Achilles heel, as he swings at a lot of balls/doesn't take enough pitches.

#16 - (CF) Jameson Hannah - The Athletics 2nd round draft selection in 2018 ($1.80M bonus - (JR) Dallas Baptist University (TX)). The left handed hitting Hannah hit .274 - .339 - .369 as a 21 year old in 110 games (492 PA's) at the A+ level during the 2019 season. Jameson is a plus defender and has average to plus contact skills at the plate but he is small bodied which typically doesn't bode well for further power production.

#17 - (RHSP) Vladimir Gutiérrez - The Reds signed Vlad as an International Free Agent in September 2016 ($4.75M bonus & a $4.75M overage fee - INT (Cuba)). The right handed starter pitched to a 5W-11L record with a 6.04 ERA in 27 GS (137 IP) as a 23 year old at the AAA level during the 2019 season (in his first 10 starts he carried an 8.43 ERA - in his final 17 starts he carried a 4.80 ERA). His repertoire consists of a plus curveball, an average to plus mid 90's fastball, and a changeup that is not currently big league ready. Many scouts see him as a middle reliever in the future, but there is still hope he sticks in the rotation.

#18 - (2B/SS) Ivan Johnson - The Reds 4th round draft selection in 2019 ($0.40M bonus - (SO) Chipola College (GA)). The switch hitting middle infielder slashed .255 - .327 - .415 as a 20 year old in 46 games (210 PA's) at the RK level during the 2019 season. (In addition he hit .381 - .491 - .587 in 57 JUCO games.) Johnson is a quick runner with good reflexes on the basepaths, and has sound glovework but he may not have the range to stick at SS in the future.

#19t - (RHRP) Ryan Hendrix - The Reds 5th round draft selection in 2016 ($0.41M bonus - (JR) Texas A&M University (TX)). Hendrix missed half of the year battling a right elbow strain, he posted a 3W-0L-2SV record with a 2.33 ERA over 19 IP as a 24 year old at the AA level during the 2019 season. Ryan sports a 96 mph fastball and plus curveball combination but like most fireballers he suffers from breakdown's in his command from time to time. He's recently been added to the Reds 40 man roster.

#19t - (2B) Jose Acosta - The Reds signed Acosta as an International Free Agent in July 2017 ($unk bonus - INT (Dominican Republic)). The switch hitting Acosta slashed .395 - .481 - .579 in 43 DSL games (184 PA's) and an additional 10 AZL games (50 PA's) as a 19 year old during the 2019 season. That stat line is a complete reversal of his 2018 DSL output: .199 - .321 - .284. It appears the Reds are going to try him at secondbase fulltime next season, which might fit best with his tweener physique.

#21 - (LHSP) Packy Naughton - The Reds 9th round draft selection in 2017 ($0.14M bonus - (JR) Virginia Tech University (MA)). The left-handed starter posted an 11W-12L record with a 3.32 ERA in 28 combined GS (157 IP) as a 23 year old at the A+/AA levels during the 2019 season. Packy's command has improved greatly since being drafted, he has an unorthodox delivery and sports average pitches across the board. He has back of the rotation upside if all works out.

#22 - (RHSP) Tejay Antone - The Reds 5th round draft selection in 2014 ($0.31M bonus - (SO) Weatherford College (TX)). The right-handed starter posted an 11W-12L record with a 4.00 ERA in 27 combined GS (146 IP) as a 25 year old at the AA/AAA levels during the 2019 season. Antone doesn't sport high velocity pitches - is more pitch to contact, but he does have good downward movement which induces groundballs at a plus rate.

#23t - (C) Eric Yang - The Reds 7th round draft selection in 2019 ($0.20M bonus - (JR) University of California at Santa Barbara (CA)). The right handed hitting catcher slashed .290 - .428 - .420 as a 21 year old in 51 games (209 PA's) at the RK level during the 2019 season. (In addition he hit .368 - .479 - .545 in 56 NCAA games.) Yang burst onto the scene his junior year, it'll be interesting to see how he transitions to full season ball in 2020.

#23t - (SS) Braylin Minier - The Reds signed Minier as an International Free Agent in July 2019 ($1.80M bonus - INT (Dominican Republic)). The left-handed hitting shortstop will see his first professional action as a 17 year old at the DSL level during the 2020 season.

#25t - (RHSP) Mac Sceroler - The Reds 5th round draft selection in 2017 ($0.30M bonus - (RS-JR) Southeastern Louisiana University (TX)). The right-handed starter posted a 5W-4L record and a 3.69 ERA in 20 GS (117 IP) as a 24 year old at the A+ level during the 2019 season. The big righty sports a mid 90's fastball and fringy secondary offerings, he has backend rotation potential but will be relegated to a pen soon if he doesn't develop a stronger changeup.

#25t - (RHSP) Noah Davis - The Reds 11th round draft selection in 2018 ($0.13M bonus - (JR) University of California at Santa Barbara (CA)). The right-handed starter posted an 1W-3L record with a 3.19 ERA in 13 combined GS (42 IP) as a 22 year old at the RK/AZL levels during the 2019 season. Davis is finally healthy and ready to show what he can bring to the table.

#27 - (3B) Michael Triana - The Reds signed Triana as an International Free Agent in July 2019 ($1.30M bonus - INT (Cuba)). The left-handed hitting thirdbaseman will see his first professional action as a 20 year old at the DSL level during the 2020 season.

#28 - (CF) Quinn Cotton - The Reds 8th round draft selection in 2019 ($0.15M bonus - (JR) Grand Canyon University (CO)). The right handed hitting outfielder slashed .283 - .376 - .409 as a 21 year old in 61 games (274 PA's) at the RK level during the 2019 season. (In addition he hit .331 - .406 - .494 in 59 NCAA games.) If Cotton doesn't workout in the outfield he could potentially move to secondbase.

#29t - (RHSP) Miguel Medrano - The Rangers signed Medrano as an International Free Agent in June 2016 ($unk bonus - INT (Dominican Republic)). The right-handed starter posted a 3W-4L record and a 3.13 ERA in 14 GS (60 IP) as a 21 year old at the RK level during the 2019 season. The Reds acquired him via TEX in an International Bonus Pool Slot trade two years ago.

#29t - (LHSP) Jacob Heatherly - The Reds 3rd round draft selection in 2017 ($1.05M bonus - HS (AL)). The left-handed starter saw action in only four games as a 21 year old at the A level during the 2019 season due to injury.

    To whom it may concern:

Unless something changes, from here on out new polls will launch every Sunday night at ~11 pm and last 96 hours, and then every Thursday night at ~11 pm and last 72 hours. The poll question won't allow me to pick 3.5 days as a time-frame.

Our top 30 should be done by March 2nd, assuming I don't miss any posting times.

For the record, if there is a tie there will not be any runoff voting. I'm going to put them into the rankings (example) as 4t. Joe Schmo and 4t. Joe Blow and then move on to the #6 vote.

I know that isn't a perfect solution, but the number of people voting for the #3,4,5 and so on candidates in a specific poll isn't going to be a big enough number for me to worry about it.

One way we have used to break ties, other than a run-off, is to use who had gotten the most votes in the prior round. Ex Players A and B tie for 6th but in round 5 A had more votes than B, So A gets slot 6. Something to consider.

It's not a bad thought, but what if one of the two is in the poll for the first time (as in I just added them)? I'm just going to keep it simple the "#t" as a rule won't kill anyone.

The Top 5 were pretty much all no doubters, from here on out the polls should be closer - as I expect more than 2 or 3 prospects to be getting votes in each poll.

I'll be adding a number of players within the next week or so as selections. As always, if you vote other, make sure you notify me of whom the vote is for or it won't count.

Re: 2019-2020: Who is the Reds #8 Prospect???

BUMP. Mike Siani is the Reds top defensive farmhand per MLB Pipline:
Reds: Mike Siani, OF (No. 8) Siani may have been the best defensive outfielder in the 2018 Draft and he’s more than lived up to expectations in center field in his year-plus as a pro. He has outstanding range and instincts, with excellent reads and routes, and he used his plus arm to rack up 18 assists during his first full season in 2019.

Shogo probably needs to be added soon to the prospects poll.

Re: 2019-2020: RedsZone's Top Reds Prospects Poll Results

I've made the decision that I'm going to run 3 more polls (after I close the current one), like I have been doing; in order to finish the top 25. After that I'm going to run one poll where everyone will be able to vote for 5 players they think deserve to be ranked 26-30 (those spots will ultimately be assigned to the top 5 vote getters). Everyone else who receives votes in that poll, but are outside the top 5 will go into our rankings listed under the "other" notation.

And that will be a wrap to this years' Top 30 prospects exercise.

So, four more polls and we'll be done - 2 more weeks of polling.

This year's list is officially done. I'll finish out the short bios at the bottom of the top 30 sometime this week.
