    For those wondering about Cingrani.

*Tony Cingrani lasted only four innings and said he felt fatigued. However, the left-hander said there was no health issues. He allowed three runs, including Anthony Rizzo’s two-run homer. More on Cingrani will be up soon in my game story on MLB.com/Reds.com.

Contrary to your statement, only Phillips has been underperforming among key players.
Underperformance from a player means that that player is performing below their career numbers, not their numbers from a random month last year. Unless they are living in a fantasy world, that is

757690 pretty much already refuted this.

The numbers you posted, combined with the historical fact that the Reds have consistently had poor April starts only confirms my point.

The only stat lines that matter are the ones that are averaged out over a season. Virtually everyone, including our most key players, are underperforming their typical numbers.

This guy either goes 7 and is lights out or has trouble making it to 5. Inconsistent but expected of someone who has not even started 30 games in the majors yet.

There's guys across the board underperforming for sure, but I don't think it's really as many as you think.

Phillips and Ludwick both might have just gotten old.

    Votto will probably slightly improve.
    Bruce will improve.
    Frazier is about right.
Cozart won't be THIS bad, but he'll be bad.

    Hamilton? Who knows.

Catcher won't be this good all year.

The offense will be better, but probbaly not a whole lot better.

Votto's OBP is about right on target but his AVG is a good 30+ points below his career average.

Jay Bruce has done well with his OBP, but his AVG is also about 30+ below where it should be and his SLG is almost a full .100 below where it should be. Right now he's on pace to only hit 18 HR's.

I'm not expecting the moon from Brandon Phillips, but if this is a sign of continued dropoff, then he has absolutely gone off a cliff. His OBP is .272, well below his career AVG and almost 30 points below last year (which was considered a bad year for him). He might be aging rapidly but the guy is only 32....not 36. He's basically the same age as Shin Soo Choo.

I just described how much our 2-3-4 hitters were underperforming. That's pretty key to me. I could also throw in Homer Bailey. Does anyone really think he's gonna end the season with a 6.15 ERA?

Could also throw in Cozart who is batting an anemic .180....almost 70 points below his career average, but we all know not to expect the world from his bat.

I would throw Ludwick and Hamilton in a wild card category due to both their ages. Tough to judge.

My overall point was that a multitude of people are underpeforming, which doesn't even include guys who are still injured like Latos and Chapman. The team has potential upside. I understand that potential doesn't necessarily equate into automatic performance, but judging the totality of the circumstances, the guys aren't out of it with 135 games to go. It's certainly possible for all of our key guys to have down years....but which is more likely?

Yep I remember thinking back in 2009 or whenever that Cueto just didn't have the know-how to pitch a complete game. It's part of learning to pitch. That doesn't mean Cingrani will be fine, but it is to be expected.

Low OBP guys don't tend to age well.
