    It seems like a lot of those double rookie cards ended up being one super star and one guy nobody has ever heard of.

    That's likely because most of the rookies ended up as nobodies, and we only look nowadays at those that became stars. Ergo, the ones we look at had a star and a nobody. I'm guessing the majority of rookie cards had two nobodies.
