Yeah, UC and UConn were never "P5" schools, because that wasn't a thing at the time. Ex-BCS would be more accurate, I suppose. It's been 6 years now, right? 2013 was the last season of Big East football?

Actually 7 years. Wow, time flies.

I'm not aware of a time that they were ever a member of any conference or former conference of the current P5. If they were, it was a long, long time ago

They've never been. But the Big East was obviously a peer until the ACC and Big XII raided.

The Big East is irrelevant to a discussion of college football

It is with respect to the current landscape (since, you know, the current Big East doesn't sponsor football). But the AAC's former identity as the Big East is relevant if we're talking about how UC, USF and UConn used to be BCS programs (back when the BCS was a thing).

OK, maybe he was referring to the BCS conferences which included 6 conferences...but I doubt that's what OSU is going by today. There's no P5 rule for OSU or anyone else in the B10

Yes there is. They do count AAC teams in there though, hence how UC and UConn count.

    False.

Beginning next season, the Big Ten is requiring its teams to play one non-conference game per season against a team from one of the other four Power 5 conferences.

But, somewhat strangely, that requirement can also be filled by playing one of a select number of teams from outside the Power 5 conferences.

    What?

According to a Tuesday report from ESPN's Brett McMurphy, the Big Ten will allow games against independents Notre Dame, BYU and Army, as well as games against Group of 5 teams such as Cincinnati, Connecticut and Navy, to count toward that requirement.

Just for reference, OSU is scheduled out to 2027 with some of their out of conference games. In essence, you could have signed a home and home with UC in 2012 when it was a BCS school.

It's only false if you include AAC teams as part of the Power 5. You can't claim a P5 policy and then throw in a non P5 conference

If they count UC and UConn then it's not a P5 requirement

I believe it was supposed to be P5 teams only and it was relaxed to include Group of 5 teams once the Big 10 went to 9 conference games. That said almost every team has P5 games set up every year in the future with a few exceptions.

That Big Ten policy is a bit silly. As I said on the last page, it's not a bad idea, but hard and fast rules always end up causing perverse incentives. Kansas counting and Boise State not counting makes the rule irrational.

Something I would like to see but will never happen:

Each Power 5 team plays based on the standing from that previous season and rotate the venue.

For example, Alabama could only schedule this season from Ohio State, Washington, Oklahoma, or Clemson.

Georgia could only schedule Washington State, Michigan, Texas, or Pitt.

The only problem is the lack of balance in the conferences to make it work. There would be more parity and we would get some good football games out of it instead of Alabama playing the New Mexico States or Ohio State playing the FAUs of the world.

Excellent point. Power 5 schools do not equal a better opponent.

I can’t imagine when MSU signed up for the home-and-home with ASU they envisioned losing both, to a Herm Edwards team no less.
