when a catcher is giving signs....he appears to make 4-5 hand signs in sequence....are all of those part of the sign, or is there an indicator mixed in?

It depends. The number of pumps may be the pitch the catcher wants thrown like 2 pumps is a curve, 3 is a change, etc. Or there may be an indicator like the sign after the 2nd sign for instance. Or they could mean nothing and they already know beforehand what pitches they want thrown.
