Tough business, Casali's done nothing but perform well in a Reds uniform.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

    Ridiculously stupid move, if so.

    Just absolutely moronic.

.260/ .345/ .440/ .785 career as a Red with good defensive peripherals and popularity amongst pitchers-- not to mention an annual salary that projects to be less then $2.5M-- and that gets you non-tendered.

This stinks of the Lindner Era.

Looks like a lot of teams are going to be non-tendering some productive players.

The fact Trevor Bauer still posts here gives me hope he is going to sign with the Reds.

I think they want to move forward with Tyler Stephenson and they clearly value Barnhart’s defense over any of us haha.

I think it stinks of the Covid Era. Or the Tyler Stephenson Era.

The reality is Barnhart makes too much, so they're stuck with his contract. And at some point the team needs to give Ty Steve some reps. Spending an extra $2MM on Casali didn't make sense, unless they could move the entire Barnhart contract.

My hope is the Reds are pinching pennies where they can to make room for a new SS.

This is a cruel cut. Casali did nothing to lose his job. In a sane world, somebody would be trading for that guy. I get that the Reds have three catchers for two slots and the young stud swings from the same side of the plate as Casali. Yet Curt is a solid pro catcher and will be helping whatever team he's playing for next season provided the league hasn't completely lost its mind.

Sadly, MLB has completely lost its mind.

I mean all the covid era is the owners using the pandemic as a front to continue being embarrassingly and pathetically cheap. The Phillies tried to claim they lost billions of dollars this year, and I think someone checked their books and it was actually like 80 million.

Even with the lack of fans this year, every owner in the league can easily afford a Casali on their roster. On some level, I bet the owners appreciate getting the perfect excuse delivered on a silver platter to keep being tightwads and chipping away at the margins of the game.

I bet most of the owners have lost real money elsewhere (in the actual businesses that made them billionaires), and are looking to get back money with their franchises.

Baseball is just a side hobby/investment to probably all of them.

Would not surprise me, which is one of the things most dragging down the sport at the moment, a collective of owners who view the league as their own personal piggy bank, rather than having any pride or stakes in actually trying their best to win games.

I get the hand wringing over Casali, but it’s time to bring up Stephenson. Casali is a nice player, but he’s not a needle mover. Stephenson has the ability to be an everyday all-star caliber catcher. Casali should not block him. Time to move on and wish him the best.

The person who reported that retracted it. They claimed to have lost ~$150M.

Casali's been great, but at some point they have to allow Stephenson to develop at the MLB level.

Stephenson should be getting the most playing time and I don't think it should be close.

The commissioner stated that MLB lost 3 billion overall - averaged per team that is a $100 million. Of course, the Cardinals owner claims to have lost $2 billion.

I like Casili but even if there was no covid, there was a good chance he'd be non-tendered. There will be a glut of players after today - my question is can those non-tendered be signed by the team that non-tenders them?
