NRI's have just 3 more weeks to make their case...

Opening Day is Thursday, March 30th but most big league rosters are finalized by noon EST on Saturday, March 25th. (though those moves may not be reported by their respective clubs until later in the week)

That date is just 3 weeks from today!

The reasoning is because of a clause in the MLB/MLBPA Collective Bargaining Agreement:

It states: that if an Article XX-B MLB free-agent signs a minor league contract before noon on March 20th, 2023, he must then be informed no later than noon on March 25th, 2023 as to whether or not his contract will be selected for placement on the Opening Day 26-man roster or MLB 60-day Injured List.

If the club does not agree in writing to add the player to its Opening Day 26-man roster or MLB Injured List at that time, it must either grant the player his immediate unconditional release upon the players request or agree to pay the player a retention bonus of $100,000 to play in the minor leagues.

Players paid the retention bonus can once again request to be granted their unconditional release on June 1st, 2023 if they are not added to the 26-man roster or MLB Injured List by then.

Article XX-B MLB Free agents are players who have 6+ years of service, finished the 2022 season on an active MLB roster or IL, and whom are in a major league Spring Camp on a minor league contract.

These decisions usually finalize a roster (though late injuries in the final week can alter those decisions).

    --------------------------->>>

Below are this year's (32) Article XX-B free-agents in spring camps (keep in mind the list could continue to grow over the next two weeks):

Signing Team - Pos - Name - Service Time
    ATL - RP - Jesse Chavez - 12.038
    ATL - UT - Ehire Adrianza - 8.131
    ATL - OF - Kevin Pillar - 8.072
    CHW - OF - Billy Hamilton - 8.087
    CHW - IF - Hanser Alberto - 6.085
    CIN - C - Austin Romine - 8.148
    CIN - SP - Chase Anderson - 7.161
    CIN - RP - Daniel Norris - 7.063
    CIN - RP - Hunter Strickland - 7.033
    CIN - UT - Chad Pinder - 6.047
    DET - UT - César Hernández - 8.154
    DET - RP - Trevor Rosenthal - 8.078
    KCR - OF - Jackie Bradley Jr. - 8.150
    KCR - IF - Matt Duffy - 7.059
    LAA - RP - Chris Devenski - 6.036
    LAD - OF - Jason Heyward - 13.000
    MIL - OF - Tyler Naquin - 6.033
    MIN - SP - Aaron Sanchez - 6.113
    NYM - RP - Tommy Hunter - 12.156
    PIT - C - Kevin Plawecki - 6.167
    SDP - IF - Rougned Odor - 8.121
    SDP - RP - Craig Stammen - 11.160
    SFG - C - Roberto Pérez - 8.083
    SFG - SP - Joe Ross - 6.018
    TBR - UT - Charlie Culberson - 7.051
    TBR - OF - Ben Gamel - 6.029
    TEX - RP - Ian Kennedy - 13.124
    TEX - SP - Danny Duffy - 11.085
    TEX - C - Sandy Leon - 8.043
    WSN - RP - Sean Doolittle - 10.122
    WSN - RP - Alex Colomé - 8.118
    WSN - SP - Chad Kuhl - 6.079

Most of the players on this list will make more than league minimum if their contracts are purchased, most will also have incentive bonuses in their contracts. Kevin Pillar for example will make $3,000,000 in 2023 if he makes the Braves Opening Day roster.

Keep in mind, these aren't the only players on minor league contracts who have opt out dates, most players with 3.000+ years of service in camps who finished the season last year on a big league roster also have opt out dates written into their contracts. In addition some players with 6+ years of service in camps who didn't finish the season last year on a big league roster also have opt out dates written into their contracts.

In addition to the 32 aforementioned players above, an additional 3 XX-B Free Agents signed NRI contracts since the initial post; they are:

    COL - 3B - Mike Moustakas - 11.111
    MIA - SS - Jose Iglesias - 10.036
    MIA - 1B - Yuli Gurriel - 6.043

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CUT WEEK IS NOW UPON US...

It's rather customary for club's too release XX-B Free Agents who have no chance of making their club's OD roster the week prior to opt-outs, this gives their agents a little extra time to shop their services prior to OD.

Expect to see many of the players listed above to be released this week.

The Reds have already released Romine and Norris back to free agency and Roster Resource is currently projecting; Chavez, Adrianza, and Pillar making the Braves roster, Pinder making the Reds roster, Moustakas making the Rockies roster, Bradley and Duffy making the Royals roster, Heyward making the Dodgers roster, Iglesias and Gurriel making the Marlins roster, Hunter making the Mets roster, Plawecki making the Pirates roster, Odor making the Padres roster, Perez making the Giants roster, and Colome and Kuhl making the Nationals roster. The other 18 players who qualified for this list, in RR's eyes, are either set to be released this weekend or will be sent to the minors and will pickup a nice retention check.

Below is a link to all of the NRI's Martinez is projecting to make OD rosters (including XX-B and non XX-B), the list includes 4 true rookies...

Unless Moose is used as a straight DH, he's going to still suck, his spring PA's mean nothing IMHO.

COL will owe him 720,000$ this year if they name him to their roster, that's nothing for them to try.

A couple of these guys opt out this Saturday due to their respective clubs not having the roster room and the Reds should be very interested - the last man on the bench and a number of pitching slots could easily be upgraded.

Luke Voit who isn't an XX-B qualifying NRI (doesn't have 6 years of service), but is a NRI in the Brewers camp who also has an opt out this weekend in his minor league contract would be an interesting add for the Reds. He'd be a 1B/DH only option, making Myers likely a fulltime OF'er but his power would thrive in GABP and could be controlled through the 2024 season via arbitration this winter - possibly replacing Votto next season or becoming a trade chip this summer.

I’d really like to upgrade Pinder.

Moustakas was barely a good enough hitter to DH in his prime. His value was always having an above average bat and being able to play the infield…

Pinder's secret weapon is if he is demoted he can opt for FA

Plus he's a placeholder for Senzel ( Please everyone, refrain from a Senzel dig here)

    He's in roster roulette

Yeah I’d add Voit in a second.
“I don’t care,” Votto said of passing his friend and former teammate. “He’s in the past. Bye-bye, Jay.”

Pinder is going to be used early. When Senzel gets enough PAs in Lousville, he'll be called up to replace him.

(Unless, of course, Benson/ Friedl fall on their faces. Then, Senzel will be brought in to replace them. Pinder, then, may be replaced by Fairchild.)

I'd also be happy with the Reds grabbing Voit, but I'm getting the feeling that the Brewers are holding on to him. Hope I'm wrong.

He’d surely sign with the Phillies over the Reds if his contract isn’t purchased by the BrewCrew leading him to opt out. They likely just lost their first baseman.

Jason Heyward has been informed by the Dodgers that his contract will be purchased for opening day.

If you were good at that, you wouldn't be in this 0-2 count to begin with.
