It's honestly crazy to me that they didn't brand as "Ohio Soccer Club" already, or add "The" to their name. That's the only thing people in Columbus care about anyway.

MLS needs to declare 40 year moratorium on clubs rebranding. Let your teams develop some history.

I'm fairly nervous about the Chicharito signing for the Galaxy. Maybe he's still good and the step down in competition will get him going again, but he hasn't shown much for almost two seasons now. Seems like a move designed more to get people in the seats than on winning games, but we shall see.

I've always hoped for the Ohio Players.

Question for the FCC fans, where are you on the hyped-disillusioned spectrum? I got the impression last year was rough for fans. You had that glorious rise and then got whacked with the reality that they don't really have to try anymore. You deserve a team that's got big ambitions.

I think rebranding is mostly a bad idea too, mostly just because of the history because it's not a great brand, but for some reason Crew fans response on Twitter is hilariously over the top to me. Talk of revolt, Save the Crew not having been worth it, canceling season tickets, etc. I mean, come on. The team moving is life or death as a fan, this kind of thing isn't the same level.

I wouldn't be opposed to changing the colors, only because they're Pittsburgh colors. I've got a Crew knit hat that's gotten mistaken for Steelers gear more than once. (ok, twice.)

The colors aren't going to change. Dr. Pete Edwards already tweeted about that.

    Yeah, I'm just talking.

The Crew really is a dumb as doornails brand. I have no idea what they were thinking in the 90s.

It's fine, sometimes dumb things become fine over time and with history, but it is probably in the top 5% dumbest branding in American professional sports. I get that people are attached to it, but people become attached to anything over time.

There was a lot of dumb with MLS and their original branding.

All models are wrong. Some of them are useful.

Maybe they should add an "e" to make it seem more British? Columbus Crewe? Or put a number in between to make it seem more German? Columbus 96 Crew? MLS teams get slammed for having poor "brands" if they have American-style names, or for being too copycat if they go with the FC/United/City/Real/Sporting route. Which is dumber? The name Columbus "Crew" which emphasizes teamwork, or Real Salt Lake, which just alludes to Spanish teams, but has no connection or history linking it to any kind of patronage from the Spanish Crown or the local history of Salt Lake City? Real Salt Lake was just picked by the owner because he heard of Real Madrid and thought it sounded nice.

Really, I think most Crew fans would be find with a tweaking of the name to get rid of the stupid "SC," if only because it was put in there by the previous regime and it was mandated by said regime that everyone refer to the team as "Crew SC" which just got on everyone's nerves. I think there's a strong desire, at least among a subset of Crew fans, to include a reference to 1996 to emphasize the that the Crew was the first MLS club. So Columbus 96 Crew or Crew 96 would probably go over well with the supporters. I don't believe the owners have any desire to rebrand as something like "Ohio FC" because the new owners have said that they want to emphasize that this is Columbus' team.

There are plenty of Minor League baseball teams with silly names contrived just so that they can have a funky hat for New Era to sell.

I don't think MLS is ready to deal with the throwback-day uniforms that pay homage to the album covers, though.

The Crew just traded Captain Wil Trapp to Inter Miami. Between splashing the cash for Zelarayan, trading for Nagbe, trading Trapp and not resigning Pipa, it looks like the new owners are not messing around. The Crew picks up money and an international roster spot. Should be interesting to see if there's another signing in the works.
