Reds Sign Derek Dietrich

Looking at his defensive stats he looks like a serviceable corner IF who's pretty bad every where else. Barring injury I doubt he'll get much corner IF time with the Reds. The bat looks good, but I'm just wondering where he's supposed to play. We still don't have a viable SS option behind Peraza.

2b is dietrich's 'best' defensive position. he is also ok at third. (EDIT: turns out he has played first base too, i didn't realize that.)

he's bad in left field according to the stats, but as was said earlier in this thread i believe that could be because left field is tough to play in miami with so much ground to cover.

Man I hate the 13 man bullpen. We need a true backup for both SS and CF still at this point.

Reds could still open the season with a twelve man pitching staff. Eventually it’ll be 13, but not necessarily in the beginning. Sometimes there are early off-days, etc.

Final note on this: I’m calling one more big player move by the Reds before OD. Something that will bring a CFer, or more pitching, or both. Lot of possibilities, but that’s an official prediction.

Corner OFers, Scooter, India, all possible guys who could move.

Red Sox have been rumbling about contracts again lately and Jackie Bradley Jr. was one guy they were supposedly motivated to move for salary reasons earlier this offseason. Still would be a fan of that move.

Just me, still don’t see Matt Kemp on the team. Not a real NL bench players, no defensive versatility. Makes more sense in the AL.

One minor caveat. With Votto, Scooter, Winker, Schebler, and Dietrich, the team could be a bit vulnerable to LH pitchers. Kemp would help in that regard. As it stands, the only other RH hitters are Peraza, Suarez, Puig, Senzel, and the catcher.

i fully expect matt kemp to be on the reds and have a good season. his interview with mlb network recently where he talked about his meeting with david bell was very telling. sorry, would link to it, but i can't right now. i bet a google search would pull it up quick.

i don't think the reds are worried about centerfield unless senzel proves he can't handle the job. outfield seems set to me.

It's worth noting that Puig has a 100 point lower ops vs LHP in his career, and had a near 300 point gap last year .921 vs .626. He's basically like having another lefty in the lineup.

JBJ would really complete this offense/defense.

It may seem like an underpayment, but I wonder if a deal built around Schebler+something for JBJ could work. It would shave 8mil off of their luxury tax payroll, and get them a viable LF/4th OF who is still cheap and has quite a bit of control left.

Like this pickup. Have considered Dietrich a good target for a couple years now -- the defensive versatility and solid LH bat is a valuable combination.

Yet another move I really agree with. Guy can play all over the diamond and gets on base at a very reasonable clip. Has some pop too. Plus he hits from the left side. A perfect player to round out the bench.

hit-by-pitch is every bit as valuable as a walk. dietrich only has 144 career walks ... but he has 93 career HBP.

this is a good point. i still think hit-by-pitch is an underrated stat. some guys just have a knack for it. dropping that elbow when a curve ball is thrown far too inside, instead of getting out of the way (yes, technically that should not be a HBP if the batter doesn't try to get out of the way, but they very rarely enforce the rule). also shows a lot of toughness, which can rub off.

I think this move helps to create a mix and match situation in which the Reds could have 6 LH bats against tough RHP's, and 6 RH bats against tough LHP's.

The dude is basically a copy of Schebler as far as a hitter goes. So I do not see the point especially if Schebler is a bench player.

Having a Schebler bat on the bench is a good thing. Having more Schebler bats on the bench is an even better thing because his bat is better than a typical bench player. They also signed him to a minor league deal, very little risk and no requirement to roster him. I don't see what's not to like about it.
