Only Wade Miley this season has averaged more than 6 innings per start and it's exactly one inning more (133 innings in 22 starts 6*22=132).

Last season our Cy Young award winner averaged about 6.5 innings per start. Welcome to the modern game of baseball. Mostly driven because efficiency in pitch counts are being ignored and pitchers are being encouraged to waste lots of pitches and reach the 100 pitch mark by the 5th inning.

Why is this happening? To avoid contact or hope that more double plays can be set up? Yeah, I posted earlier that only starter (Miley) is averaging 6 innings or more.

I'm guessing it's they zig, we zag kind of thing. As you probably know, analytics has determined that everyone should be hitting home runs and small ball is out the window. Well, if it's better for the offense to wait for home runs to score, doesn't that mean it's best for pitchers to avoid giving up the homer at all costs? So they do every thing in their power to avoid it which means lots more balls and strikes which translates to high pitch counts.

Vlad has made some adjustments since his brief midseason foray to AAA. Most notably throwing the change-up more, curveball less, and inducing a much higher rate of ground balls.

Exactly. At the end of the day, what more can you ask for than a quality start?

Its like some are just waiting for the other shoe to drop just to say…see told ya!

We wait 2 months for Castillo to get it in gear, while this rookie comes in as a cool customer and does nothing but give QS after QS. Give the kid some credit!

He’s currently a very good #5 starter, who may well get better.

I agree. He's more enjoyable to actually watch pitch than the higher end stuff guys. Works fast, keeps the fielders engaged, doesn't walk people and keeps the game moving. There have been lots of guys with his profile who've been successful.

He did exactly what you need to do against a poor hitting team. Pound the strike zone, don’t give them some free base runners. I thought today was by far his best game of the year.

Even the run the scored on him was a couple of cheap hits.

He has a presence out there that is far beyond what you see in a lot of rookies. Impressive kid.
