Pretty good deal - even if he really drops off in the last two years, it's not a bank breaker. Surprised the D-Backs couldn't have made that work for themselves and kept him.

So, somewhere between this and 10/$330 (Harper) for Puig? Eight years, $250 maybe?

I’d be shocked if Puig got more than even Goldschmidt tbh. He’s a good player and all, but it’s been awhile since he’s been worth more than even a couple WAR and the Dodgers were reportedly willing to give him away for a long long time. I see him as one of the guys who gets squeezed in free agency.

Oh, I agree, but he's a big name and sees himself in that class - he's going to want to get paid. He very may well find himself on the outside looking in if he hits the market but if he's mashing mid-season, it's going to take a big deal

So, this may very well be an overreaction to an out of context quote during an interview on one occasion, but the fact that Puig has admitted that he didn't try as hard when he had years left before free agency makes me very nervous about the idea of the Reds giving him a contract longer than 2 to 3 years.

I know that every person, whether subconsciously or consciously, tries a little less hard when their career/salary/prosperity is on the line (like in a contract year in sports terms), but the fact that he admitted it makes me nervous that it is a conscious laziness for him, rather than a subconscious "I am not on high alert, I feel safe and therefore relax a bit" feeling that perhaps most people feel in that same situation.

If Puig performs well this year, I'd love it for the Reds to extend him for a few years though.

There's a very real possibility that Goldschmidt puts up a higher WAR this year than the entirety of the Wood/Gray/Roark trio.

you're not exactly going out on a limb there when talking about a position player, still relatively in his prime, who has finished in the top-3 of the nl mvp voting 3 times in his career. and he's healthy.

3 Hrs in game 2 for cards

Goldy is a top 10 offensive player, and will be for a few more years

The cards are such a better baseball company than we are

Yet such a better baseball company hasn’t made the playoffs in 3 years.

No question about that but your "average" 1B will put up some decent WAR whereas the horrible pitching that those 3 will be replacing was probably negative WAR so the net improvement for the team should be much greater

It was definitely negative WAR those three are replacing. Good point.

However, isn’t WAR suppressed a little for 1B because of their defensive WAR being effected by playing an “easier” position?

So your stance is the Reds are the same caliber of organization as the Cards.

The cardinals are the worst organization in all of sports. Just a trash team. The city of St Louis is the worst city in the US as well.

It all comes out in the wash. Goldschmidt's WAR as compared to what they'd otherwise get from a 1B vs our 3 new pitchers over Homer, Romano and whoever
