After years of hearing everyone recommend it, I finally got around to Shelby Foote’s Civil War trilogy. Long as heck, but great. Now I’m thinking about another read through O’Brian’s Aubrey/Maturin series. I can’t get enough of those books.

Gotta tell ya'. It's pretty compelling.
So as Manson (Cincy kid, btw) was forming his "family" in SF, he and his "girls" were frequent visitors to the Haight-Ashbury Free Clinic which was also doing LSD research from a grant from the National Institute for Medical Health, which was a CIA front.

The CIA was knee-deep in Project MK-Ultra at the time, as revealed by the Church hearings in the 70's.

Hanging around the Free Clinic at the time was "Jolly" West who was also a therapist for Jack Ruby.

I know it sounds pretty incredible. But bear in mind the author was a long-time movie writer for Premier magazine that had little interest in any conspiracies. He was hired to do a puff-piece about the 30th anniversary of the Tate-LaBianca murders.

I just read thee entire trilogy also. Really great! I'm not sure you could have a more comprehensive history of the Civil War while keeping it very interesting.

I just started Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin. It is excellent also through the first fourth of the book.

Around fifteen years ago, I read the first two Foote books. Someone was going to pick up the third for me at BAM, but the person helping them said they'd never heard of it and didn't carry it, so they picked up To Appomatax by Burke Davis, which was an interesting book by an author who, like Foote, thought of the Confederacy as "we" yet wrote an accurate history without venturing into Lost Causism. It's been a while, and I'm vague on details. Anyway, I still haven't read Foote's third book. btw, the book wasn't, best as I can tell, related to the mythical To Appomattax miniseries which never happened, yet still has an IMDB page.

    There's your novel, Rojo!

CIA Black Ops team that ran MK-Ultra disband and go rogue. They do an X-Rated Forrest Gump road trip, hitting every famous crime scene from the Free Clinic to JFK.

Lot of mysteries solved with that story.

My novel? I never had any aspirations to a novel.

I guess you're making fun, but I don't really get it.

Given his reading list, I'm not sure I want to know.

I like to think I have a novel in me, but it's probably more like I have a handful of haikus in me, and I get the number of syllables wrong half the time.

    I have a handful
    Of haikus in me, alas
    They're never quite right
