I like the thought, but something tells me Krall might want more of a sure thing. Won’t complain if that happens at the right price though.

Yeah, I don't think we need another uncertain arm. We nee to pay up for a solid TOR arm.
Reds have a lot of potential - both bats and pitching - but I expect we'll see a fair amount of regression and a few potential keepers/star emerging.

I think someone like Cabrera (assuming he’s actually available) fits our competitive window much better than some of the other names we’ve seen. 2024 will be the first full MLB season for pretty much everyone except for Steer. Hard to count on a bunch of 24-year-olds finding sustained success at the exact same time. You’d hate to sell the farm for Tyler Glasnow, only to have him lead a 75-win squad and then walk. A player with more controllable years mitigates this concern.

Best bet might be to try to trade for Bieber at a lower price, extend him and let him be the modern version of a Bronson Arroyo rotation stabilizer

And I have a feeling he won't be worth it. The Reds would likely be bidding against the Orioles, Braves, Dodgers, and a division rival or two for Cease. I think if the Reds trade for a SP it'll be a lower prospect cost one year guy like Bieber or Glasnow, and if they dip into trading their top assets they'll go for a pre arb guy with 4+ years of control.
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
Now that they have addressed some of the depth issues on the staff, I am warming up to a deal for Shane Bieber at the right price.
I do feel like the asking price for guys a guy like Cease will be very high and possibly not justified, unless of course the deal is centered around India +. And if that were the case, it'd likely be a done deal.
Go get Bieber, hang onto India, and you kind of have a nice looking squad.

I think you would want to see good medicals on Beiber before giving up good prospects...
Forearm and shoulder issues coupled with a drop in velocity is a recipe for disaster.
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
Rece Hinds and Lyon Richardson for Bieber - who says no?

Only if we can extend him.

As long as the Reds feel good about the medicals I wouldn't hesitate. Even if Bieber is a complete disaster I don't think losing either Hinds or Richardson sets the franchise back at all. If he comes back strong you get a legitimate rotation piece for 2024 and might even get a better prospect with the comp pick you'd get from him turning down a QO.

Probably the Guardians.
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
I want no part of trading anything of note for Bieber. I’d do Lyon and Hinds because they’re really secondary pieces, but he has red flags all over him.
Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason
Of course Bieber has red flags. It’s why you take a chance and buy low.
If he stays in tact he’s your ace on this team. If not, you’re giving up a few secondary and a year’s salary.

It’s not even just health, his K/9 has fallen off a cliff.
2020: 14.2
2021: 12.5
2022: 8.9
2023: 7.5
I think his arm is just cooked. Glasnow is also a giant red flag injury wise, but he’s at least still awesome when he’s actually on the mound. I’d be much more willing to roll the dice on him than Bieber.

Trading for a controllable young starter would necessitate giving up key pieces. Cabrera is an interesting player, but if I’m giving really good young prospects, I want someone who doesn’t walk 5+ per nine. Bieber and Glasnow are intriguing if you aren’t giving a top 5 or 6 prospect. If Bieber could be had for Richardson and Hinds, I would definitely be on board with that, even with the injury concerns.
