Marty Brennaman: 2019 is my final year

damn nice of the Reds to put this team together for him for his final year.

This reminds me of when Cawood Ledford announced he was going to retire as the voice of the Kentucky Wildcats. I really can’t imagine replacing him. Someone will have to — and someone may do a very nice job over time — but it will never be the same.

So many memories come flooding back. I can put myself in very specific times and places remembering Marty calls.

I’m going to have to sync radio and TV more than ever this year. Hopefully the Reds can give him a fun season to ride off into the sunset.

Get to know Tommy Thrall, a new voice for Reds radio listeners

The call to the big leagues isn’t just experienced by the players, but throughout minor league baseball, there are people trying to work their way up to the highest rung of the ladder of professional baseball, people like Tommy Thrall.

Thrall, who turns 35 this month, called three games for the Reds last summer and has gotten his call-up to the big leagues for 2019. He will serve as a sort of utility man for the radio crew, hosting the postgame show, working on pregame interviews and filling in for Marty Brennaman on play-by-play when he is off. Thrall said he can’t speak to what will happen after 2019 following Brennaman’s last year as the team’s radio broadcaster.

I've been thinking about this a lot. My move would just be to import the Bengals radio team and have Hoard and Lapham do the broadcasts. Bring in a nerdy stat guy third mic to pipe in every so often with a fact, or correct anything egregiously dumb.

I love the selling points of the broadcast, particularly "Correct Time." I can remember when radio and TV stations would say "At the sound of the tone, the time will be 8:45. Ding." In the early '90s, there was a radio station in Cleveland that experimented with just getting rid of DJs. They would just pay music all day, interspersed with a man's voice giving us the correct time. Everyone just called him Fred, The Time Lord.

Back in 1974 I wasn't quite 11 years old and I was still living in the mountains of Kentucky. News didn't travel there very fast back then. So I didn't know Al Michaels had left until the spring training games had started. In fact the first game I was listening to I thought it was Michaels. They had similar radio voices. It wasn't into the game at some point that this was a new and unheard of guy named Marty Brennaman who was now doing the games.

I loved listening to Al Michaels call Red's games. It was a great loss for me when he left because I felt nobody could replace him. Especially some unknown newcomer (LOL). Well, I was wrong. I'm going to miss Marty.

Ironically, Marty thought he would be in line for the UK PBP job when Ledford was gone. Because of his relationship with Jim Host and Westwood One, Marty considered himself a shoo-in. Instead, Ralph Hacker (who was Ledford's color analyst) got the gig and Marty was seething because he did not think Hacker had the skillset for a PBP announcer.

Hacker owning the flagship station didn’t help, either. You’re right. That bothered Marty for years. There was a very pointed quote in the Lexington Herald-Leader about it.

I loved the time and weather hotline, useful for checking if the phone was working and what the hell time it actually was
