Best we can get is accidentally making the playoffs if everything goes perfect that year. There will never be excellent depth and meaningful re-enforcements like we see with other teams.

The Reds are going to go as far as their youth movement takes them. They’ve told us that many times. Veteran adds will be complimentary.

Votto at or near $20 million certainly didn’t fit in that plan.

Last year’s success with young players only made it more likely that plan will continue.

It’s entertaining, though it’s a long shot to work when other teams collect proven stars.

I’m not as convinced as most that the Reds are going to patrol only the very affordable 1-2 year contract FA waters. I think they’ll chase bigger fish in the SP market.

And he also said the Reds were "definitely buyers" at the deadline last year, and all we got was Moll.
He's going to have to show me something this winter before I start getting excited about all the payflex he has.
[Phil ] Castellini celebrated the team's farm system and noted the team had promising prospects who would one day be great Reds -- and then joke then they'd be ex-Reds, saying "of course we're going to lose them". #SellTheTeamBob

I think this is a pretty fair stance. There is lots of history of skimping and being cheap that needs to be overcome. The spending under Williams is an outlier. After a year or two, the organization stopped him, and their cheap ways returned as the norm and that's the way it is until they prove it isn't.

That's an interesting number. As long as the Rays keep competing ($74.5 mil in 2023), the Reds may think, "Why not us?" Except they haven't proven they can.

The sad thing is, I don't think ownership cares about competing.
They probably are laughing and patting themselves on the back for drawing 2 million fans on a low payroll.
They probably think, they have the magic formula, all the fans want to do is see exciting kids.. this will most likely lead them to continue to horde prospects and never try to win.
They can keep payroll low next year. Ticket sales are likely to be very healthy this winter. Even if the wheels fall off, they will still draw pretty well. Yes, if the wheels fall off, attendence will suffer in 2025, but if the payroll stays low enough, I don't think they care.

Note: I am not saying the wheels will fall off next year. I'm saying I doubt ownership cares if we win or not next year.

I have been a Reds fan since i started following baseball at age 7 in 1976. The organization has done a lot to test fans the past 20 years. Over the past 8 years or so, Votto has been the primary thing keeping my interest in the club. If the team plays like last year, with energy and hope, they will keep my interest. It the management adds nothing this offseason (at least pen depth), I fear I will not put much energy into following the team if they struggle. If Votto continues to play next year, I hope it is with a team I like such as the Jays instead of someone like LA, NYY or even pointless team like Colorado. I hope both do well next year, so I can root for each. If they both struggle I will probably pay less and less attention.

Michael Wacha, anyone? Padres declined the team option. Only 32. Great WHIP (1.161). Second year in a row of an ERA+ of 127. FB velocity (92.3) not quite what it once was, but he's still got that great changeup.

Re: Reds Trade And Free Agent Rumours 2023-24 Offseason

The Athletic published its top 40 free agent list with contract predictions and best team fits: https://theathletic.com/5029170/2023...ents-mlb-list/

    For the Reds, they have:

    7. Sonny Gray, 3/$72m
    15. Lucas Giolito, 4/$70m
    17. Michael Wacha, 3/$36m
    18. Seth Lugo, 2/$26m
    32. Mike Clevinger, 2/$22m
    36. Aroldis Chapman, 1/$12m

Weird that they didn't see a single corner outfielder fitting in Cincinnati.

Of those options at the predicted contracts, I'd jump on Gray, Wacha, and Chapman in a heartbeat.

They also predict Lourdes Gurriel Jr. getting 4/$56m. That seems very reasonable.

Why would any significant pitcher sign up to pitch half his games in GABP?
Empathy is about standing in someone else's shoes, feeling with his or her heart, seeing with his or her eyes. Not only is empathy hard to outsource and automate, but it makes the world a better place.

Money isn't the only motivating factor for any human being, though.
