I don't get the logic of punting on Eugenio Suarez (full-time middle of the lineup hitter who can actually hit in Seattle) only to sign Mitch Garver (part-time/platoon bat) for the same money.

If they sell derivatives based on Mitch Garver’s end-of-season stats, with a 15-20% return potential, and invest that money into a

Suarez put up a .715 OPS, 101 OPS+ last year. Not sure that’s a middle of the lineup hitter who can hit in Seattle.

And what were his two-year totals? And what were his counting stats?

I'm guessing you've paid no attention to two decades of misery that franchise has been through trying to find guys who can hit in that park. Adrian Beltre is about to saunter into Cooperstown and after five seasons in his prime in Seattle he boasted a 101 OPS+. That park's brutal and Suarez proved he could overcome it. Moving his salary over to a guy who averages 300 PAs a season is dumb.

The Mariners plan on using Garver mostly as the everyday DH. His playing time has been reduced due to injuries, and they think if they can keep him away from catching duties, he can play a full season.

The Mariners are betting Garver will hit better than Suarez, and so far, he has, so it’s decent bet.

Garver's been primarily a DH the past two seasons. It's resulted in 559 PAs total. He's had a 2.5 WAR over that time. Suarez delivered 1,323 PAs over that time and a 6.2 WAR. Seattle's front office is being run by chuckleheads.

I’m not going to argue against the claim that the Mariners have been run by chuckleheads. But this move makes sense to me.

Garver has been a better hitter than Suarez, but has been battling injuries from being catcher. He did DH more games the last two seasons, but he still caught a good share of games. Moving him off of catcher, to DH, with the hopes that it helps him stay healthy is decent bet.

I also think it’s a good bet that Suarez isn’t that good next year. It’s more likely that 2022 was the outlier from his last 4 seasons than it being who he really is.

He averages 60 games a year and this makes sense to you? Cool.
