Well, it kinda was, just not the kind that you'd think. The inspiration for the song was not romantic infidelity, but band infidelity. You, see this band was a struggling pub rock band in the UK. In the midst of the band's struggles, the band's bassist secretly began playing gigs with another, more successful, band (Sutherland Brothers and Quiver)behind the backs of his bandmates. Frustrated at the betrayal of his band's bass player, the lead singer penned this song, including one memorable lyric that captured the band's frustration at the betrayal.
The song peaked at #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1975, but 45 years later , in 2020 , it hit #1 on Billboard's Rock Digital Song Sales Chart, thanks to its inclusion in an Amazon Prime commercial.
