I’m curious on how they screwed up so badly on that number. The reason he was able to demand as much as he did was because the CBA changed to allow certain players to use free agent comps and not just past arbitration comps.
I assume the Tigers knew this. The arbitration panel didn’t have much choice.

So Skenes is getting 40+ in his last year of arb now. Reds might want to think of trying to get Abbott and Burns signed before they hit 5 years of service time.

The Skubal decision might just be the worst thing that happens to small market MLB teams. Naturally, Scott Boras is involved
It was arbitration, the team offered a number that was similar to the highest arbitration numbers ever won and the player came back with a number he felt he was worth based on the market which had already been set the last few years with the Angels settling with Ohtani at $30M and the Yankees with Soto at $31M as well as the FA market. Had the Tigers offered up $25-27M they might have actually had a case and won.
Skubal is an outlier and is getting what he is worth, Vlad Jr. won his case in 2024 for $19.9M and it didn't ruin small market teams. The next highest arbitration number this offseason was $15M, it isn't like all of a sudden players are all getting $30M a year in arbitration.
The small market Cleveland Guardians paid Lindor $21M in arbitration back in 2021, the only reason this number has been talked about so much is because of the gap that between the team and the player.

Historically, team projections win totals have been off by an average of 7 wins per team. You would get that same accuracy if you projected each team to win 81 games.
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/lets-mak...t-projections/Looking at the overall sample, the average error has been about seven wins

Skubal barely pitched in his pre arb years and only made 2 million in his first year of arb, and 10 million in his second. Skenes will likely make more in his first arb year than Skubal did in his second. Skenes already has a Cy Young and finished 3rd in his rookie year. He will likely shatter arb records if he maintains his current pace.
Kyle Farmer signs a minor league deal with the Braves.
That guy is really sticking around.
