    97. This song was written over 50 years ago by two members of a pioneering British glam rock band . It was inspired by a 1972 live gig, when the songwriter felt the energy of the crowd pounding in his chest as he performed. Designed as a rowdy anthem to capture the energy of the crowd at live concerts, the song debuted at #1 in the UK, a feat that was virtually unheard of. That hadn't been accomplished since the Beatles did it.

Fast forward exactly ten years. An American band reluctantly covered the song. You see, their producer demanded the band record the cover in order to secure a record deal. The band hated the idea, and decided to sabotage the recording. They refused to rehearse the song and tried to record a really bad version on purpose so the producer couldn't use it. Their attempts at sabotage failed miserably. They recorded a high energy version of the song in one take, and the song became the first heavy metal song to ever crack the top 5 on the Billboard Hot 100. So much for trying to fail!!!

The song propelled the band's album to #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart, replacing the Police's Synchronicity at the top of the album chart , and becoming the first heavy metal album to ever hit #1 on the Billboard album chart.

Can you name the song and the band who made it a top 5 hit in America? For bonus points, what was the name of the band who originally wrote and recorded it back in 1973 ?

I remember hearing about this background/story when it happened.

Cum On Feel The Noize - Quiet Riot. The original was from Slade.

    A Roy aside…

I saw Slade as second bill to Johnny Winter at Hara Arena in Dayton in the early 70’s. One of the loudest concerts I’ve ever seen between the 2 bands. My ears rang for days afterward and I’m sure permanent damage was done. I went with my brother who abused all kinds of drugs and he was out of his mind on amphetamines that night. I smoked a lot of dope and drank too much beer. We made quite the pair.

Love those stories. I bet it's loud around the Noddy Holder household.. I remember having issues hearing after my first Elton John show(we were positioned right near a speaker). I can't imagine the ear damage from a Slade show. lol

    98. There have only been 11 songs in the history of the Billboard Hot 100 with three characters(or less) in the title that topped the chart at #1. And of those 11, three of them were sung by Michael Jackson, either as a solo artist or part of an act. So , yeah, the King of Pop, was also the King of short-titled #1 hits

Can you name all three of these three letter titled number 1 hits?

I got two. “ABC” by the Jackson 5 and “Bad” by Michael Jackson. Still noodling on the 3rd.

I have 45 of “ABC”. Probably the last 45 I ever bought.

I remember seeing the video of “Bad” at McGuffey’s House of Draft on their big video screen. I drank way too much beer there. Late 70’s through the late 80’s.

    99. While Roy's noodling on that third song, here's an added question about "ABC."

What song did the Jackson Five's "ABC" replace at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 on April 25, 1970? Ironically, the song that the Jackson's replaced at #1 had just five distinct, non-repeating letters in its title. What was the song?

    *** music trivia ***

When I looked at this question earlier today while I was working, oddly enough, I came up with two songs that no one has yet mentioned- totally whiffed on the two Roy mentioned. Anyway, my two are “Ben” (Michael Jackson) and “War” (Curtis Mayfield). I am not even sure “War” was a #1 hit. We shall see.

“War” was done by Edwin Starr. I saw him as the undercard to Steppenwolf at the Convo at Ohio U 1971-ish. He put on a pretty good Vegas-y show IIRC.

I said, war, huh (good God, y'all). I did a pretty good imitation of this song

    100. I've got a dandy for you today. There has only been one mother and son tandem in rock history that have each written #1 songs on the Billboard chart. That's right, both mother and son wrote separate chart-topping songs, 15 years apart.

Mama's song was recorded by a rock and roll legend and hit #1 in 1956, staying at the top of the Billboard 100 for eight consecutive weeks. In the book, The Top 500 Songs of the Rock Era: 1955-2015, the song was ranked the second best song in the history of Rock 'n Roll. It was the #1 song of 1956, according to Billboard. Nice job, mama.

The son's song hit #1 fifteen years later, in 1971. One of the most popular bands at the time took the song to the top of the Billboard chart, where it remained for six consecutive weeks. Billboard named it the #1 song for 1971. I'm sure mama was mighty proud.

Who was this mother and son , who separately wrote the top songs of the year in 1956 and 1971 and what were these songs?
