    MLB 2026 News & Discussion

Lance posted the Reds just traded Tyler Calihan for relief pitcher Kyle Nicolas of the Pirates. Maybe it’s due to Ashcraft struggling, though I fully expect Tyler to be a thorn in our side every time we play Pittsburg.

I know very little, other than he supposedly had a decent year in 2024.

Nicolas is going to be a AAA shuttle guy who has options, just like Mey, Maxwell, etc. The Reds are likely to lose Sam Moll to waivers at the end of Spring (he's out of options) and this gives them another arm that can be used if they need a guy when the pen is shorthanded.

Per his scouting report he has an above average FB and Slider (both 55 on the 20 - 80 scale) and a plus curve (60). His change-up isn't usable (30) and he has poor command (30 to 40). There is always a possibility they can fix him, but I wouldn't count on it. He'll be a guy to stick in the pen when they are running out of arms who can come in for multi-inning stints if the starter has a short outing. He seemed to make some progress with his command late last year, but I wouldn't count on him as anything more than an extra arm as a "break glass in case of emergency" type. He has 5 years of control remaining should he step forward and be more than he seems. His fastball sits in the 97 to 98 range.

Even if he's just an emergency arm with an option, that's a good get for Tyler Callihan's pedestrian bat and inadequate glove. Krall is good at these around the margin fringe type acquisitions and that's what this is.

All my posts are my opinion - just like yours are. If I forget to state it and you're too dense to see the obvious, look here!

He went to the same pitching school as Louis Mey.

Right-hander Zack Littell is in agreement with the Nationals on a contract, according to a report from Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan of ESPN.

    It’s a one-year pact that includes a mutual option for 2027.

Washington will need to open a 40-man roster spot for Littell.

    Did it cross the Suarez?

In the category of "misery loves company" - three Brewers projected starters include Priester with a wrist problem likely to miss opening day, Woodruff coming back slowly from a lat strain last year and unclear if he'll be ready, and Logan Henderson has a sore elbow which he missed time for last year.

Lots of former Reds that are doing well, but this type of news makes it all the more clear, to me, the razor thin margins that many arms teeter. (Bats too, I'd guess.) Diaz was exceptional when he could pinpoint his stuff. Now, a quarter inch off and he's unplayable.

    I respectfully disagree.
I really don't think he ever had pinpoint control.
It seemed to me there were a lot off hitters getting themselves out by swinging and missing Sliders way outside that never crossed the plate in the strike zone

Fair. I wrote that poorly. I'll amend it to: Diaz had poor control, but it was (barely) good enoughj to work so well that he was dominant. Once he lost what little control he had, he was finished.
