    158. Does anyone remember Chicago's first song released after the death of beloved band member, Terry Kath. This song was the band's tribute to their fallen friend and bandmate. The song peaked at #14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and signified a new beginning for the band and marked a transition to new, lighter sound for the band. The song is remembered as a powerful comeback anthem, symbolizing resilience and the determination to keep making music during a challenging time. Good song.

Alive Again from Hot Streets. As an aside, the song Little One was the last charted single with Kath on lead vocals, but it fell short of the top 40.

Yes, I read Billboard religiously at Library back in the day. I was a chart geek.

Along with "Alive Again," here are two other tracks I really like from Hot Streets:

it was rare for a Chicago album to feature pictures of the band members on the cover. I think Hot Streets might have been the only studio album that did that. Some fans were not happy about going away from another design of the iconic Chicago logo on the cover. They went back to the logo designs after Hot Streets.

I think some folks were even upset that band members were shown smiling and hamming it up on the cover of this album, the first release after losing a beloved bandmate. I think that criticism was unwarranted and terribly misplaced. Sometimes, the best thing we can do to honor someone we loved is to begin living and loving life again after their passing. I've had trouble doing that after losing my mother, and sometimes I feel like I'm not honoring her memory as I should when I struggle to get back to living life again.

Do you guys have a favorite Chicago song ? It's almost impossible to name a favorite when there is such an extensive discography. There are many favorites but I always really liked "Old Days."

I'm hoping you will be able to tell me the name of this man that saved Chicago.

He was a man who was a good friend of the band. He himself was a fine musician, an accomplished and beloved jazz trumpeter. He had long admired the band's talent and didn't want Kath's death to be the end of Chicago. He met with the band after Terry's funeral and persuaded them to carry on, despite the fact that the band mates were devastated and were having serious thoughts about disbanding. Inspired by the man's words, Chicago continued on and, shortly afterwards, hired guitarist , Donnie Dacus, to replace Kath.

Do you know the name of this musician and friend of the band who is often widely credited for preventing the band, Chicago, from splitting up after the death of Terry Kath?

I met Chicago on the plaza of old Riverfront Stadium: Lee Loughlane, Robert Lamm, Bill Chanplin James Pankow, Walt P and Jason Scheff.

I said to Jason "Your dad was the bassist for John Denver!"

Which he was- but 19 year old me didnt realize he was more known as being the bassist for Elvis.

Mine is “25 or 6 to 4”, I thought “oh, I’ve been there”. More of a rocker and I love it when Terry Kathy hits the wah-wah pedal. My days of all night partying.

As I’m sure I’ve said before, I saw Chicago play at the Convo at OU Homecoming in fall 1970. Chicago 2 was still new. Then I saw them once or twice at Riverbend but I get those shows mixed up with seeing Peter Cetera there as well. Early-mid 80’s.

One band came out about the same time as Chicago and also featured a horn section. Their singer had a very unique voice. They reached #2 on Billboard 3 times but never topped the charts.

This should be a layup. Name the band and the 3 songs.

This has to be Blood, Sweat and Tears. The songs: You’ve Made Me So Very Happy; Spinning Wheel and - I am not positive about this last one - And When I Die.

Those songs were some of the earliest ones I remember hearing on the radio as a young child. Always takes me back to being a little kid.

    160. It's August of 1970 and Deep Purple have arrived in the US to kick off their first tour of America. The tour was scheduled to launch from San Antonio. But there's a problem---a BIG problem. With this being the band's first ever show in the U.S. , they had been advised to get flu shots, which they did. But lead guitarist, Ritchie Blackmore, fell ill just prior to the gig as a result of a bad reaction to the flu shot. He was unable to perform. The band , not wanting to cancel the show, asked a young 18 year-old local guitarist to fill in for Blackmore.

The young long-haired, heavy metal -lovin' axeman was one of the hottest young guitarists in the area and was a huge Blackmore and Deep Purple fan. He was already familiar with most of the band's catalog, so the band decided to roll with him as Blackmore's replacement at lead guitar. The young musician, who played in a covers band called Flash, had the blessing of everyone except for Deep Purple front man, Ian Gillian, who was against the idea. Anyway, the show went on. Before the band left town, the young guitarist got to meet his hero, Ritchie Blackmore , at the airport. Ritchie thanked the young guitarist for filling in for him.

Oddly, over the many years since the first ever U.S. show for the band , the band members of Deep Purple have been reluctant to acknowledge what happened on that night in late August of 1970 in San Antonio. The late keyboardist for the band, Jon Lord, when asked about it, flat out denied that it ever took place, saying ... "it never happened, ever." But it did. Another local guitarist whose band opened for Deep Purple that night has confirmed that Blackmore was ill and the 18 year-old from San Antonio filled in for Ritchie.

I wonder how familiar Deep Purple was with the young hippie that became lead guitarist for the band for a single night back in 1970? From what I hear, they knew the kid was a big fan who was familiar with a lot of their music and was one of the hottest young blues guitarists in the area. I wonder if they knew the kid had opened for Led Zepplin just a year prior to the San Antonio show. In fact, he had even purchased Jimmy Page's amp head and cabinet for $700.

Who was the lead guitarist, and Blackmore replacement, for Deep Purple on August 28, 1970 in San Antonio--- their first ever live show in the U.S. ???
